Symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy usually begins with tingling, numbness, or prickling in the toes or fingers. This numbness may spread up to the hands or feet and feel like burning, freezing, throbbing and/or shooting pain that is often worse at night.

Work Closely With Your Physician

The pain may come and go or it may be constant. Some types of peripheral neuropathy begin suddenly and others can take years to become a problem.

Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include the following:

  • Loss of balance and coordination
  • Burning sensation or freezing pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Extremely sensitive to touch
  • Sharp, jabbing pain
  • Unusual sweating
  • Feeling like you are wearing a glove or sock
  • Abnormalities in blood pressure or pulse
  • Difficulty sleeping due to pain in feet and legs
Your symptoms will vary depending on which peripheral nerves have been damaged and what damage has occured.

If you have any of these symptoms you should go to see your physician and be evaluated. The sooner you act on the symptoms and begin treatment, the less damage you should incur.
